Foundational Correction & High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. It is a chronic health condition that comes with a lot of complications, such as a high risk of stroke or heart disease.

The scary thing is that both stroke and heart disease are among the five major causes of death in the United States. We can therefore say, without a doubt, that high blood pressure is something that requires urgent attention.

At least 75 million people are affected by high blood pressure in the United States. This figure translates to 1 in every 3 persons in the United States.

Over 400,000 deaths every year are linked to hypertension and its complications.

The exact cause of this condition is not fully understood, but clinical research and experience have shown that Foundational Correction using upper cervical chiropractic care goes a long way in lowering blood pressure as well as its associated complications. And so, for people who have high blood pressure, a Lutz chiropractor may be of assistance.

What’s the relationship between my spine and blood pressure?

Results from medical research have established a link between the top spinal vertebra (atlas bone) and blood pressure. The atlas bone is located at the base of the brain. It contributes to the cardiovascular system function.

Studies have shown that the atlas vertebra influences the flow of blood around the brain’s base as well as the flow of blood to the arteries. Spinal misalignments, especially in the atlas bone can cause contraction of the arteries, resulting in a higher blood pressure pushing against the wall of the arteries.

Proper alignment of the spine and the atlas bone helps to maintain healthy blood pressure. To correct these Foundational Shifts of your upper spine, we use a gentle, specific chiropractic adjustment at this vital area of the body. By so doing, brain stem obstructions are removed, allowing the flow of blood to occur as it should.

What does the research say about upper cervical chiropractic and high blood pressure?

Several studies have investigated the effects of upper cervical chiropractic on high blood pressure, and it is pertinent to say that there’s a lot of hope for people with this condition. Chiropractic case studies reveal that upper cervical chiropractic has positive benefits on hypertension management.

A 2007 study conducted by medical researchers at the University of Chicago Medical Center found that upper cervical chiropractic held great benefits for individuals with high blood pressure. The study which lasted for 8 weeks involved 50 subjects and was published in the March 2 issue of the Journal of Human Hypertension.

Some of the subjects were given chiropractic care, while others were given either placebo or sham adjustments.

Subjects who received upper cervical chiropractic care experienced a 17-point reduction in their blood pressure.

That’s almost the same as taking two blood pressure medications. Little wonder then why chiropractic care is recommended for hypertension.
