Overview of a tension headache

A tension-type headache (TTH) is usually mild to moderate pain that feels like a tight band around your head. It’s the most common type of headache, but we don’t know exactly what causes it.

There are ways to treat tension-type headaches. It involves maintaining healthy habits, trying effective treatments that don’t involve medication, and using medication properly. It’s all about finding a balance.

Symptoms of a tension headache

· Dull and achy pain in the head

· A feeling of tightness or pressure across the forehead or on the sides and back of the head

· Sensitivity and soreness in the scalp, neck, and shoulder muscles

Tension-type headaches can be categorized into two main types: episodic (occasional) and chronic (frequent or long-lasting).

Episodic tension-type headaches

Episodic tension-type headaches can last anywhere from half an hour to a whole week. Frequent episodic tension-type headaches happen less than 15 days a month for at least three months. These frequent headaches can eventually turn into chronic headaches.

Chronic tension-type headaches

This kind of headache lasts long and can go on without stopping. If you have headaches for 15 or more days every month for at least three months, they’re called chronic.

Upper cervical chiropractic care addresses the underlying causes of tension headaches.

Tension headaches are the most common out of over 150 types of headaches. However, we don’t know the exact cause of tension headaches. Different things can trigger them for different people, but one common factor is tight muscles in the neck. Neck pain and tension can contribute to tension headaches, which is why chiropractic care can be helpful.

When you go for chiropractic treatment for tension headaches, your chiropractor will target the tightness in your neck muscles to provide relief. By regularly visiting the chiropractor, you may experience fewer and less severe headaches. Additionally, tight neck muscles can be caused by stress and bad posture, and chiropractic care can help fix those issues too.

Chiropractic adjustments can fix your spine and relieve pressure, which might help with tension headaches. They improve your nervous system, easing the pressure on your neck and head. This can reduce the chances of having really bad tension headaches and also give you other health benefits in the long run.

When to seek emergency help

If you have any of these problems, go to the emergency room:

A sudden and horrible headache.

A headache, a fever, a stiff neck, confusion, seizures, seeing double, feeling weak or numb, or having trouble speaking.

A headache happens after hitting your head, significantly if it worsens.
