Benefits of Garlic During the Winter

It is a good source of selenium, calcium, and phosphorus. Garlic is also rich in vitamins B6, C, and Manganese.

This article will look at other health benefits of garlic, especially during the winter.

1.It increases the circulation of blood

Garlic has anticoagulant activity, thus reducing the likelihood of blood clots. It also reduces the risk of developing a heart stroke. Garlic is rich in allicin. Allicin is a compound that helps blood vessels to relax—people who eat garlic experience an improved flow of blood through the heart. When blood flows through the heart with ease, the workload on the heart reduces. Blood pressure is decreased when your heart doesn’t have to work as hard to pump blood.

2.It keeps the blood flowing at normal pressure

Studies have shown that garlic has a lowering effect on cholesterol. In other words, it lowers your blood cholesterol level and also helps in blood pressure control (1,2,3)

You see, cardiovascular diseases like strokes and heart attacks are the world’s biggest killers.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is one of the major causes of these diseases.

Studies have shown that garlic supplements significantly reduce blood pressure in hypertensive people (4,5,6)

3.It has a stimulatory effect on the immune system

During the winter, your risk of contracting flu and common cold increases (7). Spicing your diet with garlic reduces your chances of getting infected. This is possible because the spice has antifungal, antiseptic, and nutritional properties that boost your immune system. So, when next you want to have some warm soup in the winter, throw in some garlic as well.

Now, here’s a bit of science about the immune-boosting benefits of garlic.

A large, 12-week study found that supplementing daily with garlic caused a 63% reduction in the number of colds compared to a placebo (8).

The average duration of cold symptoms went down by 70%, from 5 days in the placebo group to just 1.5 days in the garlic group.

Another study found that a high dose of aged garlic extract (2.56 grams/day) caused a 61% reduction in the number of days sick with flu or cold (9).

4. Promotes recovery from cancer

Garlic contains an anticancer agent known as germanium. Germanium kills all intestinal parasites associated with cancer.

It is important to note that there is currently research examining the role of garlic in the treatment of cancer. While this study doesn’t have all the answers yet, the results appear promising. A 2019 study shows that garlic may influence the signaling pathways in cancer growth in several ways, including:

· Causing cell cycle arrest. This means stopping the continuous division of cells. Most chemotherapy drugs work by inducing cell cycle arrest at different points in the cell cycle.

· Decreased growth of blood vessels. Cancer cells require blood and the nutrients delivered by blood just as normal, healthy cells do. In fact, cancer cells can also grow their own blood vessels. Garlic reduces the ability of these cells to induce the growth of new blood vessels.

· Garlic may have the ability to increase cell death. You see, all cells die at a certain point, but cancer cells usually have a way of avoiding this natural cycle of cell death. The components of garlic appear to increase the death rate of cancer cells.

Some studies have been performed on the role of garlic treatment in humans. Gastric cancer is common globally, being the major cancer diagnosis in some nations. A 2019 Chinese study found that treating H. pylori for two weeks of supplementing with garlic for seven years significantly reduced the risk of death due to gastric cancer (10).

5. Prevents allergies

Garlic kills fungi such as warts, thus boosting your body’s defenses against allergies. But, unfortunately, it also regulates your blood sugar levels.

I would recommend chopping up one clove of garlic into swallowable pieces and swallowing it with water with food. If you start to feel sick with symptoms coming on, swallow one with each meal.
